IN CAMMINO. La porta di Torino: itinerari Sindonici sulla Via Francigena

Religious, inclusive and sustainable tourism at the center of the “Via Francigena for All” project with the exhibition In cammino. The Gateway to Turin: Shroud Itineraries on the Via Francigena, presented at Palazzo Madama – Museo Civico d’Arte Antica in Turin from July 13 to Oct. 10, 2023, and now on display from Dec. 13, 2023 to June 14, 2024 in Brussels, in the Regione Piemonte headquarters.

It is a multidisciplinary and interactive path, a true virtual journey that highlights the historical and contemporary centrality of Turin and Piedmont, home of the Holy Shroud and main access to the Peninsula along the pilgrimage on the Via Francigena.

It is being carried out by Regione Piemonte in collaboration with Palazzo Madama – Turin’s Civic Museum of Ancient Art – and the Carlo Acutis Foundation.

Details

The project, also supported by ENIT, sees at its center the Via Francigena as one of the highest expressions of the promotion of religious and inclusive tourism and as an opportunity to dwell on one of Italy’s most important pilgrimage routes: the one that crosses Piedmont by means of the exhibition/trail that narrates the territory highlighting the historical and contemporary centralities of the region, home of the Holy Shroud and main access point to the Peninsula along the Via Francigena pilgrimage.

Accompanying the itinerary is a reflection on the theme of the pilgrim – the one who moves for material salvation, body and spirit – and the journey of the Saints of Charity, from St. Giovanni Bosco to St. Giuseppe Cafasso, from St. Giuseppe Benedetto Cottolengo to the Blesseds Piergiorgio Frassati and Carlo Acutis, with a series of encounters with the soul of the region through a visual exploration dedicated to its founding themes.

The exhibition is structured in four sections, each connected to a specific theme. The first presents sixteen original illustrations, created by young Italian artists which are now internationally acknowledged. A series of works that are inspired by the concepts of pilgrimage, spirituality, the Shroud, the paths, the Saints of Charity, but also by the essential morphological aspects of Piedmont and the relationship between man, nature and food. The second section houses a whole series of video materials specially made to illustrate the Via Francigena and the Shroud itineraries, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the landscapes of the places traversed. In the third section, a large interactive map highlights the paths of the “Via Francigena for all” project and the shroud paths illustrated in Sisto Giriodi’s book The Other Shrouds. The map is flanked by photographs of the dozens of shrouds frescoed on the exterior walls of buildings located along the Piedmont paths. These works are not widely known even by many of Piedmont’s locals, despite the fact that they constitute a singular case of popular devotion, a cycle of art spanning three centuries. Finally, in the fourth section, there is a depiction of the work conceived by Turin artist Carlo Gloria on the theme of the path, exhibited at the residence of the Italian Ambassador in Brussels.

The Exhibition

The exhibition develops the themes of pilgrimamge, the Via Francigena, and the Shroud-related itineraries with the support of:

  • Sixteen young Italian illustrators, both men and women, internationally renowned: Massimiliano Aurelio, Giacomo Alvise Bettiol, Roberto ‘Hikimi’ Blefari, Davide Bonazzi, Andrea De Luca, Massimiliano Di Lauro, Giovanna Giuliano, Riccardo Guasco, Gabriele Pino, Sergio Ponchione, Jacopo ‘Jeugov’ Riva, Jacopo Rosati, Elisa Seitzinger, Elisa Talentino, Ilaria Urbinati, Cinzia Zenocchini.
  • videos specially created to illustrate the Via Francigena and the Shroud routes, allowing visitors to have an immersive experience.

Multimedia installations and organizational coordination: ARCHILAND studio by Paolo Maldotti.

The Shroud routes

The gateway to Piedmontto Turin, opens up to a rich cultural heritage, natural beauty, and gastronomic specialties. In Turin, there is a precious asset that can be considered a beacon for those embarking on a religious journey: the Shroud.

Along the routes that connect France with Piedmont, where the Shroud has traveled over the centuries, sometimes secretly, and at times, it is said, deceptively to mislead ill-intentioned individuals, it has inspired artists. There are more than 600 iconographic testimonies that the International Iconographic Center for Shroud Studies is currently cataloging.

Among these, approximately 100 are “mural shrouds” in Piedmont, painted on the exterior walls of various buildings, including houses, palaces, and castles. But also mountain huts and farmhouses – they constitute an entirely Piedmontese chapter in the history of the Shroud and its public displays. It is little known even by many Piedmontese people, despite being a unique case of popular devotion and an art cycle spanning three centuries. (Sisto Giriodi, Le altre Sindoni)

They are Simple works, as often most important things are. Cataloged by Sisto Giriodi and displayed in the exhibition.

In the Sign of Jesus – Faces in the Face

In the exhibition, works created in 2022 by some of the best students of the Accademia Albertina di Torino are displayed alongside a piece by the artist Ezio Gribaudo, next to three objects of deep historical significance: a signed print of the first photograph of the Shroud of Turin taken by Secondo Pia in 1898, a copy of a photograph of the original painting of the Divine Mercy commissioned by Saint Faustina in 1934, and the first three-dimensional development of the Shroud commissioned by Antoine Legrand in 1974. A film highlights a common thread that links images of the Holy Face in two millennia of representations.

The exhibition was inaugurated on 20 October 2023 and remained open until 10 December 2023.

Details

The current exhibition was born on the occasion of an exhibition of woodcuts by students of the Academy of Fine Arts “Mario Sironi” of Sassari, along with some of the most important living Italian and European masters on the theme of the supreme sacrifice of martyrs.

Since 2022, the Foundation has supported young talents in their artistic research related to the theme of the Holy Face. In July 2023, it allowed a group of young people to participate in the WYD in Lisbon, where the search for the Holy Face could become a life experience. This experience was called to become part of the new exhibition “In the Sign of Jesus – Faces in the Face,” inaugurated in Asti, through their testimony.

Thus, history, art, and science intertwine to give voice to a Face capable of leaving a mark, the most represented by artists of all time: that of Jesus of Nazareth.

La porta di Torino: itinerari sindonici sulla Via Francigena (ON THE WAY. The Gate of Turin: Shroud itineraries on the Via Francigena.) Pinacoteca Albertina

Via Accademia Albertina, 8 – 10123 Turin

volti nel Volto: art, history and spirituality

Renaissance and Caravaggesque paintings, splendid drawings that are not generally on display to the public, and delightful multi-media installations: these are the ingredients that make up volti nel Volto, the exhibition organised by the Carlo Acutis Foundation, in collaboration with the Accademia Albertina di Belle Arti and with the support of the Council for Artistic and Cultural Heritage.

Installed in the heart of the Pinacoteca Albertina in Turin and coinciding with the European meeting of the Taizé Community, held in the city from 7 to 10 July 2022, volti nel Volto offered young people the experience of a journey through art focused on the Holy Face of Jesus. In addition to learning more about the theme of the face of Christ by observing tens of works created between the 15th and 20th centuries, young people also had the opportunity to take part in educational workshops conducted by the Accademia.

The exhibition was inaugurated on 6 July and remained open until 16 October.

Pinacoteca

The Pinacoteca dell’Accademia Albertina is not an ordinary museum, but a treasure chest of artworks and an artists’ workshop! The trestles in the rooms allow for copies of the paintings and sculptures to be made.

During the volti nel Volto exhibition, the students painted on mirror surfaces. This created a meaningful effect, in which the other paintings in the room were reflected in the mirror, allowing visitors to “step into the work”, immediately realising that the expressions and the gestures that have been depicted in paintings for centuries are the same ones each one of us can see in our everyday lives.

The exhibition engages with the image on the Turin Shroud, which has provided a great deal on inspiration through the centuries for how the face of Christ has been portrayed. The works on display include Salvator Mundi, Divine Mercy and the sketches by Gaudenzio Ferrari and his apprentices, one of the world’s most important collections of preparatory drawings from the Renaissance period.

The Foundation

Inspired by the life of Blessed Carlo Acutis, the mission of the Foundation is to promote, develop and coordinate activities in the public interest, with the aim of restoring dignity and hope to people in difficulty, taking care of the local area with projects to provide support for social issues and culture, in particular regarding historical and artistic heritage and scientific research for social purposes. The Foundation seeks to make every life count, especially those of young people.
